The village was first mentioned in 802. On the „Kirchberg“ of Merxleben the battle in which many soldiers had to die occurred in 1866 near Bad Langensalza.

In 1952 the first agricultural producers‘ cooperative was founded in Merxleben, in the former GDR. 22 farmers did the beginning, in 1958 the village was fullly corporated.
